So we hear it all the time: you should apply God’s Word in your life. It’s true that we should, but how exactly do we do it? College degrees are earned specifically on this subject, but even if you are no theologian, you can take God’s Word and apply it in your life. Not only can you and should you, but God wants you to! As you learn to apply Biblical Truth you will step into a wonderful world of blessing as you see how God’s Word is meant to be used in your every day life!
First explore the passage.
If you’re going to apply the Word in your life, you have to start with…well, the Word! So as you are reading the Bible and see something interesting, or read a promise God makes, ask yourself these questions:
- What did it mean to the original hearers?
- What is the underlying timeless principle?
- How Could I practice that principle?
In order to determine these things, you may have to dig a little deeper than usual. Try reading the entire context of the passage, or if possible use the cross-reference notes in your Bible to read parallel passages. If you have one, you can even use a Bible commentary. Some are very expensive, but you can get a basic one at your local Christian Bookstore for around 10 bucks.
Once you’ve done some reading and thinking and digging and come up with what God is saying to you in the passage, proclaim it. You know, everything God made He did by speaking. For us, we may not literally create stars and planets, but we can create attitudes that can and do change our outcomes through what we say. Here are a few starter scriptures for you to begin reading, memorizing and saying for some common areas of need in our lives:
- Battles- 1 John 4:4; Luke 10:19, Rom. 8:37
- Money- Philippians 4:19, Psalm 1:1-3
- Fear- Psalm 27:1
- Sickness- Psalm 103:3
- Confidence- 2 Corinthians 3:6
- Safety- Psalm 121:8
Take the verses and read them, then go stand in front of a mirror and look at yourself as you say them. Realize that what you are speaking is a promise of God to you! The more you do this, the more you will start to believe God’s Word and expect it to work, the more it will!
Finally, share it with others.
Tell other people about what God has done for you. Did you get a promotion? Sure, thank the boss, but that God who is your source and tell others about how good He is. Did God give you strength to face something you were afraid of? Tell others about what happened. It builds your faith, being reminded about what God has done, and it shows other people that He is indeed real, alive, and active today!
Romans 10:14 says ‘how, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?’ Maybe you won’t preach sermons, but your life is a powerful testimony to those around you, so as you learn to apply biblical truth in your life, let others know what’s happening!
